Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) III

Learn more

A Clear View of High-level Problem-Solving Ability Level Problem Solving Ability

The Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) III, part of the Raven’s family of assessments, is a widely known and highly trusted measure of general cognitive ability. It is designed to measure an individual’s ability to perceive and think clearly, make meaning out of confusion, and formulate new concepts when faced with novel information.

What the APM Measures

The Raven’s APM evaluates an individual’s general mental ability to:

  • Identify and Interpret Patterns: Each item presents a visual matrix with a missing piece. Test takers must identify underlying rules, such as progression, rotation, transformation, or logical relationships, to determine which option completes the pattern.
  • Think Abstractly Under Increasing Complexity: Items become progressively more difficult, requiring higher-order reasoning, flexible thinking, and the ability to synthesise multiple visual cues. Successively more challenging tasks require the ability to identify subtle relationships, integrate information from multiple perspectives, and analyse intricate cause effect patterns.
  • Solve Novel Problems Without Prior Knowledge: The Raven’s APM III is an assessment of what is commonly referred to as “fluid intelligence”, or the ability to reason through new challenges, rather than rely on learned information.

Why Organisations Use the Raven’s APM

  • Predict on-the-job performance: The Raven’s APM III is predictive of work performance, particularly in jobs where the ability to quickly acquire new knowledge and solve complex (novel and ambiguous) problems is required.
  • Not language dependent: The test requires minimal verbal instruction, thereby reducing the influence of language proficiency and cultural background and making it suitable for screening applicants across different languages and geographic regions.

Key Features

  • Nonverbal matrix style assessment suitable for online delivery with instantaneous reporting after the assessment is completed.
  • 23 matrix problems, with a standard time limit set at 40 minutes.
  • Global norms for executives, directors, managers, and professional/individual contributor roles.

Report Outputs

Report provides norm‑referenced percentiles with practical interpretations of an individual’s capacity to solve complex, unfamiliar problems.

Applications

  • Organisations commonly use the Raven’s APM III as part of the selection process to screen candidates. Results may be used to rank applicants or, when combined with other assessment methods, to inform an overall evaluation of candidate suitability.
  • Used to identify high-potential individuals with exceptional abstract reasoning ability.
  • Determining suitability for advanced technical, analytical, or conceptually demanding programs where prior education may not fully reflect capability.
  • Workforce planning to assess readiness for roles involving ambiguity, systems thinking, or non-routine problem solving.
  • Used as a benchmark predictor when evaluating the incremental validity of interviews, simulations, or other psychometric assessments when predicting future job performance.
