Watson Glaser II Critical Thinking Appraisal

The Gold Standard for Measuring Critical Thinking

The Watson Glaser II Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) is one of the world’s most trusted assessments of critical thinking—widely used in professional services, law, finance, government, and leadership selection. It measures an individual’s ability to interpret information, evaluate arguments, identify assumptions, and draw logical, evidence based conclusions. Because these skills underpin sound judgement and high quality decision-making, the Watson Glaser II is a cornerstone assessment for roles requiring analytical precision and structured reasoning. This tool is suitable for selection and development across professional managerial populations.

What the Watson Glaser II Measures‑Glaser Measures

The assessment evaluates five core components of critical thinking. Together, they create a rich, multidimensional view of an individual’s reasoning capability:

  1. Recognising Assumptions

Identifying whether statements are supported by evidence or rely on unspoken premises. This reflects the ability to “read between the lines,” question underlying beliefs, and avoid taking information at face value.

  1. Evaluating Arguments

Assessing the strength, relevance, and credibility of reasoning presented. Strong performers accurately distinguish well supported arguments from weak or emotionally biased claims.

  1. Drawing Conclusions

Determining whether a conclusion logically follows from the information provided. This includes weighing evidence, avoiding over‑generalisation, and forming sound judgments under uncertainty.

  1. Making Inferences

Judging the likelihood of conclusions based on the presented facts—categorising statements as true, probably true, insufficient data, probably false, or false.

  1. Interpretation

Evaluating whether interpretations logically follow from the given material without relying on external knowledge.

Why Organisations Use the Watson Glaser II

  • Predicts job performance in analytical and judgement heavy roles
WGCTA scores correlate positively with performance indicators and academic success, making it one of the strongest predictors of suitability for decision-making roles.
  • Trusted across law, finance, government, and professional services
Organisations rely on the WGCTA to differentiate candidates with strong reasoning skills—particularly when applicants appear similar on paper.
  • Assesses thinking, not industry knowledge
By focusing entirely on verbal reasoning and evidence based judgement, the Watson Glaser II provides a fair, role agnostic measure of cognitive capability.
  • Supports development as well as selection
Reports include breakdowns by sub‑skill, enabling targeted coaching and leadership development.

Test Structure & Format

The Watson Glaser II is typically administered online and includes:

  • 40 multiple-choice questions‑choice questions
  • 40-minute time limit
  • Drawn from large, randomised item banks (WG‑III) to enhance test security
  • Based on the RED model: Recognise Assumptions, Evaluate Arguments, Draw Conclusions

When to Use the Watson Glaser II

The WGCTA is ideal for:

  • Legal and compliance roles requiring rigorous, text based reasoning‑based reasoning
  • Leadership and management selection where judgment quality is essential
  • Graduate recruitment programs screening for analytical potential
  • Assessment centres and development programs targeting reasoning capability
  • High stakes decision roles such as cybersecurity, HR advisory, policy, and research
