The Data Leader is characterised by high scores on Learning Approach (HPI) and Science (MVPI). These individuals tend to take a data-driven approach to problem solving and exhibit an analytical leadership style. Preferring to take an information-oriented approach, Data Leaders tend to be skilled at analysing relationships between variables and identifying data trends. They enjoy staying up-to-date with industry trends and prefer using technology to solve problems. Their strong preference for working with data and technology may at times cause them to underestimate the importance of managing individuals who prefer a more intuitive approach to decision-making.
While the Data Leader is quick to latch onto new technologies and emphasise learning opportunities, it will be important for this individual to ensure that they do not overwhelm staff with their enthusiasm for learning opportunities. Others may learn differently or prefer more hands-on training versus traditional, classroom-style learning activities. Bearing this in mind, the Data Leader should Start to make an effort to provide a variety of learning opportunities to team members so that each person can learn in an effective manner. Help the Data Leader determine how they typically provide learning opportunities to their staff. Do they share books, courses or tutorials? Perhaps there is another method they could leverage as well. For instance, some team members may learn better through “doing”. Perhaps the Data Leader could provide additional hands-on learning opportunities for these individuals. This activity will help the Data Leader understand that by leveraging all approaches to problem-solving, people with differing styles can contribute to the overall solution as well.
Another effect of the Data Leader’s approach is that he/she may prefer analysis to action, and therefore seem slow to make decisions. These individuals may let their curiosity and analytical side get the best of them, leading them to have difficulty coming to rapid conclusions. In this respect, it will be important for the Data Leader to realise when they have enough information to decide and move forward. Data Leaders might also assume that they have all the answers. As such, they will need to Stop trying to solving all problems themselves and instead, allow their staff to solve problems on their own when appropriate. Have the Data Leader reflect on an instance in which they stalled making a decision because they did not have all of the data. How might have expediting their decision have helped move things forward more effectively? Perhaps there is someone they can reach out to on their team to help them analyse situations and devise potential solutions in the future. Encourage them to identify who on their team could play such a role.
At their best, Data Leaders are those who eagerly pursue learning opportunities and stay informed about industry trends. As such, they should Continue to leverage their skills in data analysis, forecasting business unit needs, and data-driven problem solving. Use their love of learning and their data-driven style to build a learning environment within their team. For example, they might consider holding information sessions, group Q & A meetings, or regular discussions of an important topics in their business unit.
