Coaching Around Profile Combinations – Ingratiating

Individuals with combined higher scores on Sociability (HPI), Interpersonal Sensitivity (HPI), Dutiful (HDS) and Affiliation (MVPI) are considered to have the Ingratiating combination. Their day-to-day communication style is gregarious and friendly. Others consider them polite and considerate in the way they come across. Under stress, their natural inclination is to follow the leader and avoid potential conflict. Their underlying values instill a sense of commitment to the organisation, particularly those in authority. While they tend not to rock the boat or disrupt the status quo, their deferential approach may make them appear easy to take advantage of or unwilling to stick up for their own beliefs. At the extreme, this individual might be considered a brown noser – doing whatever is asked of them in order to gain approval from authority figures. They might also fall prey to overcommitting themselves in an effort to make everyone happy.

Day to day, this person’s high Interpersonal Sensitivity might cause them to hold their tongue or refrain from saying what may need to be said in an effort not to hurt other’s feelings or cause friction. Under stress, this tendency is amplified by the high Dutiful score, which may make it difficult for the individual to challenge authority or present a different viewpoint. As such, others might take advantage of their submissive nature and not include them in the decision-making process. The Ingratiating individual should Start sticking up for themselves in these situations by adding to the conversation and sharing their viewpoints with others. Before their next meeting or discussion with colleagues, encourage them draft at least three points or questions that they can add to the conversation. This will allow others an opportunity to hear their point of view and might even spark a new way of thinking.

The primary challenge for the Ingratiating combination lies in their willingness to say yes to everything. Not wanting to rock the boat, this individual will do whatever is asked of them in order to appease all parties. This may result in an overwhelming work load as the individual may stretch themselves too thin to make everyone happy. Challenge the individual to Stop saying yes immediately; when asked to take on a new client, task or opportunity, have the individual pause to reflect on the request to determine priority and significance. Can the request be delegated elsewhere? Why is this person asking me to do this? Is this my responsibility or duty? Considering these questions might help the individual evaluate each request and not overcommit to doing too much.

Where this person truly excels is in their communication style. Others likely enjoy working with these folks, as they are pleasant and lively. They enjoy being around others too and likely draw energy from social interaction (Affiliation). A Continue tip for the Ingratiating combination would be to harness this social skill to energise others and facilitate teamwork. Continue to think about all organisational stakeholders and how this individual might leverage their energy and social savvy to collaborate with others in the organisation.
