Team effectiveness and development
Turn team insight into stronger performance
PBC combines evidence-based assessment, expert interpretation and facilitated action planning to help teams understand how they work, address what is getting in the way and agree practical priorities for improvement.
PBC’s approach
A tailored journey from diagnosis to sustained action
The right pathway depends on the team’s level, context, priorities and available data. We tailor the diagnostic and development pathway so the team can focus on the evidence and interventions most relevant to its goals.
End-to-end support: PBC can lead the complete journey, from stakeholder consultation and assessment administration through analysis, facilitated team development, action planning and follow-up. We can also work alongside appropriately qualified internal practitioners where that better suits your operating model.
Understand the context
Consult with key stakeholders to clarify the team’s purpose, priorities, current challenges and desired outcomes.
Select the diagnostic approach
Choose the most useful source of evidence, including personality-based insight, multi-rater feedback or a combined approach.
Administer and analyse
Coordinate the selected assessments, review available data and identify the patterns most relevant to the team.
Prepare and facilitate
Shape the workshop around the evidence and create a constructive setting for the team to explore findings and implications.
Agree practical action
Translate insight into clear priorities, ownership and shared commitments that connect to the team’s day-to-day work.
Reinforce and measure
Support follow-up, coaching or reassessment where appropriate to reinforce development and track meaningful change over time.
Resources & thought leadership
Explore the evidence behind high-performing teams
Practical research and perspectives to help leaders understand team effectiveness, personality and the conditions that support stronger performance.
When team effectiveness matters
Make the team’s real challenges visible
Team development is most useful when it is anchored in the team’s context and the outcomes it needs to achieve.
Unclear roles or ways of working
Misalignment around priorities
Low trust or ineffective communication
Decision-making difficulties
Conflict or behavioural friction
Limited shared accountability
Leadership-team transition or change
A need to measure development over time
Choose the right source of insight
Different questions call for different evidence
Start with the business question. PBC can then identify the assessment and reporting pathway that provides the most useful evidence for the team.
Personality-based team insights
Help teams understand likely patterns in behaviour, values, working preferences, team roles, potential derailers, team culture and alignment.
- Most useful when
- The team wants to understand its underlying dynamics and how individual tendencies combine at team level.
- Typical inputs
- Existing or newly completed HPI, HDS and MVPI results, depending on the report selected.
- Relevant options
- Hogan Group Graph, Group Graph with Frequency Distribution and Hogan Team Report.
Multi-rater team insights
Provide direct feedback on how team or leadership behaviour is currently experienced by team members and relevant stakeholders.
- Most useful when
- The team wants direct evidence about current performance, culture, leadership behaviour or stakeholder experience.
- Typical inputs
- Quantitative ratings, qualitative comments and internal or external stakeholder perspectives.
- Relevant options
- High Performing Team Assessment, Hogan 360 group reporting and customised Board Assessment.
A combined approach
Connects likely behavioural tendencies with direct feedback about what colleagues and stakeholders currently experience.
- Most useful when
- The team needs a more complete picture of why patterns may occur and how those patterns affect others.
- Typical inputs
- Individual personality data, aggregated team data, multi-rater results, comments and relevant benchmarks.
- Development value
- Supports a richer facilitated discussion and more targeted team commitments.
Interpretation and delivery
PBC can scope a consultant-led team session, including preparation and facilitation. Organisations with appropriately qualified internal practitioners can also deliver selected reports themselves. The Hogan Team Report requires Hogan Certification.
Not sure which approach fits? PBC can help scope the team’s question, available data and the most appropriate development pathway.
Discuss the optionsDedicated team assessment
High Performing Team Assessment
The High Performing Team Assessment, or HPTA, gathers feedback on how the team performs across 12 critical themes for success. It helps teams understand their mix of strengths and development opportunities across the two domains of Performance and Culture.
- Quantitative ratings and qualitative feedback
- Feedback from team members and relevant external stakeholders
- Executive, Management, Frontline and Agile variations
- Relevant benchmarking to support interpretation
- Pre- and post-assessment comparison where applicable
- A minimum of five raters to protect confidentiality and anonymity
Assessment and reporting options
Select the level of detail the team needs
Select an assessment or report to review what it provides, when it is most useful and any important prerequisites.
Personality-based reporting
Multi-rater reporting
Hogan Group Graph
A visual summary that compares individuals at scale level, helping the team explore differences in behaviour, potential derailers and values.
- Best suited to: a focused, accessible discussion of team roles, culture, alignment and barriers to success.
- Inputs: existing HPI, HDS and MVPI results.
- Primary outcome: a clear visual foundation for facilitated discussion about how individual patterns contribute to the team.
Group Graph with Frequency Distribution
Adds frequency distributions to the Group Graph, showing the spread of team results across score groupings and in comparison with the average.
- Best suited to: larger groups where the distribution of results provides useful context beyond an aggregated view.
- Inputs: existing HPI, HDS and MVPI results.
- Primary outcome: greater visibility of how common or varied particular tendencies are across the group.
Hogan Team Report
A comprehensive written report that draws on personality assessment data to help teams understand internal dynamics, strengths and weaknesses, potential fracture lines, culture and shared values.
- Best suited to: teams seeking detailed written analysis and a deeper facilitated development process.
- Prerequisites: individual personality reporting must take place before the Team Report is produced; interpretation and facilitation require Hogan Certification.
- Inputs: HPI, HDS and MVPI results for between five and 30 team members.
High Performing Team Assessment variations
The HPTA is available in Executive, Management, Frontline and Agile variations so the assessment can reflect the team’s level and context.
- Best suited to: intact teams seeking feedback on Performance and Culture.
- Inputs: team-member ratings and, where relevant, external stakeholder feedback.
- Prerequisite: at least five raters are required before a report can be produced.
Hogan 360 group reporting
Individual Hogan 360 results can be aggregated to identify common leadership strengths and development opportunities across a team, cohort or broader group.
- Intact Team Report: combines individual 360 data for three or more people with shared accountability, a mutual goal and the same leader.
- Cohort Report: combines results for peers who share a business division, role level or leadership program but may not work together regularly.
- Summary Report: provides a side-by-side comparison of individual scores to support analysis of talent capability trends.
Customised Board Assessment
A customised multi-rater option for Board settings. The assessment and reporting approach is scoped according to the Board’s context, stakeholders and development priorities.
- Best suited to: Boards requiring a tailored diagnostic rather than a standard team instrument.
- Primary outcome: evidence to support a focused discussion of Board effectiveness and agreed development priorities.
