Why use Hogan Leader Focus 360?
Built for emerging and first-time leaders
The Hogan Leader Focus 360 was created in response to the challenges people face when moving from being an individual contributor to a manager. These transitions often require new skills, stronger self-awareness, and a shift in mindset around leading others, managing performance, and navigating changing workplace relationships.
What it helps organisations do
- Increase self-awareness in future and first-time leaders
- Support career development early in a leader’s journey
- Identify leadership strengths and opportunities from multiple perspectives
- Develop more flexible leaders who can adapt their style to different situations
- Inform coaching and development conversations with practical behavioural feedback
What the report measures
The Hogan Leader Focus 360 provides a snapshot of how a leader is currently perceived by others in the workplace. It captures both self-ratings and ratings from others across six leadership styles, helping highlight which aspects of a person’s natural leadership style are most visible and impactful at this stage of their career.
This makes the report especially useful for conversations about:
- self-awareness
- confidence versus competence
- leadership development priorities
- style flexibility and situational effectiveness
What the report includes
The Hogan Leader Focus 360 combines quantitative and qualitative feedback to provide a rounded view of leadership behaviour. The report includes:
- 48 scaled items
- 26 ranked strengths
- 26 ranked opportunities to improve
- Open-ended comments on strengths, opportunities to improve, and overused strengths
- A development plan
- Appendices with supporting rater frequency data
Each of the six leadership styles includes eight behaviour-based items, rated on a 7-point scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree, with a not applicable option. Scores are averaged across items, and average style scores exclude the person’s self-ratings.
Raters also identify the participant’s top four strengths and top four opportunities to improve, creating a practical summary of what others most want the individual to keep doing and work on.
Key benefits
Multi-rater insight
The assessment provides a nuanced and comprehensive view of how an individual is seen by those they work with regularly, offering insight into behaviours that may sit outside their awareness.
Self-awareness
The report compares self-ratings with others’ ratings, helping identify alignment or gaps in self-perception. Where discrepancies appear, the results can support powerful coaching discussions about confidence, capability, and development readiness.
Leadership development
Because the tool highlights which leadership styles are most and least prominent, it helps leaders understand how they are likely to focus their effort, manage themselves, and relate to others. This can guide development in ways that increase flexibility and effectiveness.
Action planning
The report includes a development planning section for identifying what the individual wants to keep doing, start doing, and stop doing, based on their feedback.
Compare over time
The current page states that reports can include pre- and post-scores to measure change over time. The technical guide supports use for ongoing development, though it does not describe a formal pre/post scoring methodology in the same way the webpage does, so this claim is worth keeping only if it reflects current reporting functionality.
Privacy and informed consent
Participants provide informed consent before completing the survey, with clear coverage of purpose, data usage and storage, access to data, and security.
